Enrolment Scheme Details

In accordance with Section 11A of the Education Act 1989 the Puketapu School Board of Trustees has being instructed by the Ministry of Education to establish an Enrolment Scheme to avoid overcrowding at Puketapu School.
The purposes of an enrolment scheme, as set out in Section 11A of the Education Act are:
1. To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding at the school; and
2. To ensure the selection of applicants for enrolment is carried out in a fair and transparent manner; and
3. To enable the Secretary to make best use of existing networks of State schools.
In achieving its purpose, an enrolment scheme must, as far as possible, ensure that:
a) The scheme does not exclude local students; and
b) No more students are excluded from the school than is necessary to avoid overcrowding.
The Home Zone
All students who live within the home zone as described below and on the attached maps shall be entitled to enroll at the school.
The zone is the area bounded by those properties that have direct access to the following roads:
Puketitiri Road starting from and including Quarry Ridge Road to number 1972 (include Soldiers Settlement Road),
Glengarry Road to number 775, Apley Road;
Waihau Road (to number 197); Dartmoor Road, Puketapu Road (to the crest of the Taradale Hill);
Springfield Road, Moteo Pa Road; Omaranui Road up to 30 metres past the Regional landfill on the Taradale side; Swamp Road to the Pirau Road intersection.
Current student addresses in above excluded areas shall be deemed to be in zone but only for as long as they contain children who, at the time of enrolment, are current students or siblings of current students.
Proof of residence within the zone may be required.
Out of Zone Enrolments
At the beginning and at the midway point of each year the board will determine the number of places that are likely to be available in the following two terms for the enrolment of students who live outside the zone. Should there be vacacies, the Board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area serviced by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and specify a date which all applications must be received.
The order of priority in which applicants who live outside a school's home zone are to be offered places at the school is now as follows:
(a) first priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school:
(b) second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school:
(c) third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school:
(d) fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school:
(e) fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school:
(f) sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.
If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
